Heyo! Just another random who’s moving over from centralized social media to the Fediverse. Mastodon wasn’t too bad but I love anything like Reddit!

Games, anime, Japanese, food, and music are my loves. Fanfic beats food tho, I can read for hours instead!

  • My main focus is that I have the choice to donate to them, and that there’s not some third party I’ve spent money on donating to them, hence my Framework mention. I can choose wether or not to donate to Lemmy devs, or an instance that supports them. But, if I buy/support something, especially something OSS or in the spirit of small tech, and then they turn around and donate the profits to Nazis, I’m gonna be sad and stay away from the project after that. I couldn’t make the choice of where my money goes after they got it, so I have to place my trust in them to not fund shit I hate.

It’s like how people are dumping Spotify because they’re investing in drones for Israel.

I’m just trying to minimize my dependency and connection to bigots as much as I can, service by service, step by step.

  • I’m pretty sure they’re talking about catching pubic lice (genital crabs) either due to sleeping around, or the Myrtle Beach area being kind of shady.

I went there with my family when I was a kid, and yeah… Our hotel was fine but the place was giving old, and I’ll never forget this mom who let her kids play in a nasty ass abandoned jacuzzi pool that was off-colored and had cigarette butts in it…

Forgive me for being born after the 90s y’all, but sometimes it’s nice to have a reboot. Well. I could care less about movie/TV show reboots since so many places show the originals or you could pirate, but when it comes to games, I appreciate being able to enjoy the same games my mom did but with slightly better graphics and on a console we own/PC. And yes, I could pirate the originals, but sometimes it’s nice to play it as it was intended, especially for hand held games.

Yes reboots can be lazy and uninspired, and simply for money purposes, but other times it’s nice to see something come back to life and get a second chance. There’s so much stuff I wouldn’t have known about or enjoyed if it wasn’t for reboots.

  • So, in the US, a standalone, bare-minimum with ads included Disney+ subscription costs $9.99. Oops, actually we’re raising it to $11.99 TOMORROW! So after a paying for a year of Dinsey’s cheapest plan, you’d have paid $144.

But maybe Disney isn’t your thing? Well. Netflix costs $7.99 for the ad plan, and $17.99 for the no ads plan. But do note, even on the ad supported plan, you STILL can’t watch everything.

Ad-supported, all mobile games and most movies and TV shows are available. A lock icon will appear on unavailable titles.

Ranges $96-216 per year for ads or no ads.

Like anime? Crunchyroll offers a $7.99 plan, but it might not have all the content, so then there’s the $11.99 plan. So $96-144 per year. But their catalog doesn’t even have every fucking anime, and they’ve let dubbing go to the wayside after buying out their main competitor, Funimation (in which we lost several anime due to licensing).

Listen to music on top of that? Spotify for non-students ($5.99) costs $11.99, so $144 in a year. YT music is $10.99 for non-students, so $132

So say you listen to Spotify, like anime, and watch Netflix, you’re paying at minimum $336 per year, on the cheapest plans available, which usually have ads or missing features.

I’ve been looking at Optiplex and Lenovo ThinkCentres on ebay recently, and for my bare minimum standards of 1. Can support virtualization, 2. Can do Intel quick sync video and encode HEVC 10-bit (So about 10 year old devices) the prices range around $90-$150. Some 2TB HDDs would be about $100. You’d probably be pirating since most of the new shows on streaming services have no physical media to buy/no way of just owning a movie or TV box set. Even then, outright buying music and movies is cheaper in the long run. Anything you already own can be added to your library. You’ll never be told that “oops we didn’t pay to re-up our access to that movie, so it’s gone!” You’ll never have new ads, paywalled features, limited devices, or other bullshit. The server is up whenever you want it to be, provided you can handle being tech support.

So in the end, a home server + drives costs less than paying for several services where you own shit, and they can cut features or raise the price any day. But yes, we’re just being conceited assholes.

  • I’m chugging along and balancing personal study time and school. I participate in a listen every day challenge with a Wanikani forum, so I try to do 20-30 mins every day. I used to be good about making anki cards out of new vocab, but I’ve gotten lazy recently and slipped by the wayside 😅

I was playing Ace Attorney 5 in JP, but I dropped it a month ago when college ramped up more. There’s just so many games I want to play, I’ll never get to them all.

But I can acknowledge how much progress I’ve made in a year and compared to me 4 years ago. If only I didn’t hate speaking…

  • GroupMe (Microsoft) and Discord isn’t required for pure learning purposes, but 99% of clubs at my school use them, so I’d be unable to participate in a lot of shit if I dropped them.

Instead we just get stalked by Canvas for any assignment/classwork related purposes. Oh, and lockdown browser for online tests…

But I could totally believe teachers forcing students to use some shitty app to communicate with students and submit work.

Edit: Not necessarily social media, but AWS exploded today and so Canvas (school learning platform) is down and my classes literally can’t do online assignments until it’s fixed lol. So yeah dependency on big tech can suck sometimes.

Am woman. Love the little guys so much.

[email protected] is filled with them 🥹

(I don’t know how to properly link a Lemmy community so I hope that did it…)

Also TIL the difference between Opossum and Possum, the white ones who play dead are from North America, while the brown sugar-glider looking friends only live in Australia, New Zealand, and China. They’re not the same at all, and in fact Possums are too friendly, don’t play dead, and will literally walk up to people.

Okay, I could’ve workshoped it more sure. But I feel like you can still get a similar idea from it. The dish is something that on paper sounds delicious, but when you actually try it it’s just okay or not appealing. I like fruit, I like ice, but I don’t really dig smoothies. It sounds appealing, but the end result is meh.

Sex sounds like this enjoyable thing, and for many it is, but the reality is you have to take the time to prep your partner, deal with fluids, deal with any sort of gross (but natural) shit that might happen. I guess I could treat it like a sort of porn vs reality situation; porn/ideas gives you the baked cake/finished meal while the reality is you have to bake the cake/make the meal yourself. I love steak, but I don’t want to go through the motions to make said steak.

Gonna be real dawg, this is like telling a gay guy who’s never fucked a woman “But are you sure??? If you keep your mind open you might like pussy bro.”

With the food analogy, you could hear a description of a food, and then make a decision on if you’d actually want to eat it or not. If I know I don’t like spicy-sweet and tropical foods in general and then someone says, “hey, wanna try this stir-fry with a coconut mango sauce?” I think I can make a reasonable assumption that I’d hate that shit.

It’s up to a individual to decide if they want to have sex or not, and even though therapy might be needed to work through some thoughts, at the end of the day if you’re uncomfortable you just shouldn’t do it.

  • If you use the web installer provided on GrapheneOS website, you can’t fuck it up. Just make sure you use a chromium browser when you do it, for some reason it crashes on Firefox (but it didn’t brick my phone, so don’t worry)

No root needed, just follow the instructions on the website (read before doing it). You probably could brick it like anything else, but I didn’t and I barely knew what I was doing (and like I said, it crashed on me when trying it via FF).

Neat things they do that Google doesn’t (afaik):

    • Auto turning Wifi and Bluetooth off if it’s not connected (security and saves battery)
    • Being able to deny wifi permission to an app just through regular settings (Stock androids need root to do that). Like, I use Gboard, but it had no wifi, so it can’t send telemetry to Google.

    Notable things that don’t work:

    • Some banking apps, really depends on luck. My debit card bank doesn’t work, but my credit card bank does. Check this list to see if your banking app is tested. The reason is out of GOS hands, Google changed from SafetyNet to Play API or smth. If you can, just do web banking.
    • RCS is finicky enough on stock devices, but GOS ramps it up to a new level. There’s workarounds, but don’t be surprised if it breaks a few months later. Highly recommend getting your friends/family to communicate with you through a different E2EE app, like Signal, XMPP/Jabber, etc. or else you’ll be stuck with insecure SMS
    • Some people have Android Auto issues? Idk, I’ve never used it
