I feel that social media has opened the door to too much open hostility to acts of kindness. Strategizing around a best move politically rather than having an open heart, even to people that may hate you.
It was Harris’ choice to post this publicly for people to react to. If it was simply about being kind then it could’ve been a private communication to the Cheney family directly.
It was performative at its core and woefully out of touch as well.
This isn’t building bridges though. No Republican is going to be moved or softened by this statement. It’s going to actively alienate the people who are supposed to like you though. The best move is to simply say nothing at all.
All this bullshit tells me is that those in power are still seeing this as nothing but business, like what we’re going through is simply a contract negotiation. No hard feelings. That they can watch their colleagues cause the death and misery of thousands and then leave that at the door and go grab a drink with that person.

Similar problem with Dying Light too.
I’m not talking about jobs, just people who do art for fun. Before AI there was still a lot of D&D fan art for example. Tons of people drawing their character or getting a commission done of the party after a long campaign. That kind of thing.
I think AI art has a negative impact on that sort of expression. People who might have tried it instead just generate something instead, never learning they really like to draw. People who would’ve commissioned something now can just generate a pic instead. People who had fun sharing fan art lose their motivation because for every one picture they complete, 1000s of AI images bury their art so it never gets appreciated.
Or where hiring an actual real artists - for example if you were to need dozens of graphics for, say, a TTRPG you’re running.
The only issue with that is that the AI was trained off the art from people who did create art for their TTRPG either paid or as a passion project.
Does that mean that new art effectively stops getting made for these scenarios? That real artists who are inspired to make cool art for their games just disappear or get assumed it was just AI?
I kind of wonder if we just stagnate from here, with very little new art being created that doesn’t come from AI. In 10 years will we still be using the long recycled art from the last human artists? (Not that humans will stop creating art, but less will and they will often be drowned out from the flood of AI output)
One of my team members basically does this all the time. Personally I think it’s pretty obvious, but as far as I can tell the boss buys it every time.
My cousin’s talked me into giving CoD ‘one more try’ like three times now. It’s never worth it. The game is always worse and my cousin also tends to just not play for months after a handful of gaming sessions, so I don’t even get the benefit of hanging out.
Generally stopped trying to game with him anymore. Just too flaky.
For me it’s ‘Maintain a reasonable routine for 100 days’. I can always get a burst of motivation and accomplish things. What I can’t do is reliably do the chores for an extended period of time. Repeating, but intermittent small tasks are my kryptonite.
There’s definitely this aspect, but at least for me with strict parents there’s also loads of examples of:
‘Huh, doing this particular chore every two weeks instead of every week doesn’t actually cause any real problems and isn’t a world ending disaster like my parents seemed to claim’
Becoming an adult meant finding out just how much of my childhood was personal preference of my parents and not some sort of objectively correct way to live. Life has been a lot better now that I can do things the way I prefer.
Same. Dealing with a cord was enough hassle to very rarely ever use it.
But because it’s comics and they need to keep selling them it’s not like things are allowed to truly get better. If it ever does the universe is rebooted and they start over.
The city is literally cursed and goes through shit constantly partially due to that.
Honestly if the city is literally cursed, then the best use of resources is a) curse breakers or b) relocation program to somewhere not cursed. And then quarantining the city so no one can get in anymore.
It may have been his green card. I’ll admit to not being intricately aware of the process. I just know he was taken advantage of due to his inability to change job titles without doing something to his efforts to eventually become a citizen.
Also, you can’t really move jobs either. So a H1B friend of mine was in fact underpaid for the work he was doing because actually moving to the job title he was doing would’ve restarted the clock on his citizenship.
I think AI will go more the route of ‘the cloud’ rather than 3D movies. It has valid use cases, but by now no one’s really hyping up the cloud anymore. It just exists for the scenarios it makes sense and most of the bullshit use cases have died off to one degree or another. AI will eventually lose its appeal as a buzzword and then it’ll just be there for the stuff that’s worth the cost.
The big die off will happen when companies stop subsidizing it and try to charge what it’s actually costing them to run.
People talk about echo chambers a lot, but I’ve found it nearly impossible to keep politics and general doom content out. I’m rapidly losing my interest in the Internet as a whole simply because it seems to bring mostly pointless suffering to myself.
I think it’s one thing to not be willing to go live as a hermit to avoid unethical consumption and another thing to simply… not participate in rent seeking behavior like this.
I think we underestimated the harm that capitalism would do in terms of normalizing greedy sociopaths. It’s turned into a giant propaganda machine that serves to gaslight the masses into believing that the sociopaths are good and right and deserve what they’ve stolen.
And we’ve built a world that silos people away from other normal people so it’s even harder to use your community to fight back.
It’s going to be incredibly hard to do any sort of reset now. Most people refuse to even see any sort of problem with it.
As someone who enjoys timberborn, I wonder if the tax mechanics help address the issue timberborn has with the late game lacking any real challenge. Much of the fun is front loaded in that game for, so I tend to restart often. A challenge beyond simple survival might address that gap.
