I really hope the developers change this. Having a different avatar for each world or server I play on just seems like a no-brainer to me. I’m sure the devs are planning to implement this sooner or later…right??

Same here — the variation is wild. Even if we don’t get per-server avatars, being able to save/load multiple profiles would already be huge.
Simon actually teased save/load avatar presets recently (“next update or the one after”). So it looks like this is already on their radar.

It’s pre release. If you have a problem with missing featurez and buggy gameplay, recommend you hold off on the game.
