I found a version without the JPEG artifacts in this Tumblr post although my BG removal attempt wasn’t quite as clean and has a noticeable blue/white tinge on the part touching the textbox (what tool did you use?). Once I get a better background removal pass on it, I can generate a 4-bit indexed image that will save a ton of bandwidth (for reference, the original one posted is 1700 KB, my non-indexed cutout is 500 KB, and the indexed version is 40 KB (~2.4% the original size).
The conversion isn’t perfect—if you zoom in, you’ll see some stray pixels here and there with odd colors—but at emote display size it’ll be completely unnoticeable. And actually, if anyone has any recommendations for better image quantization software, I’m all ears! All I did was color pick the 8 colors in the image manually in GIMP and then let it automatically convert it (ends up being 4-bit instead of 3-bit due to needing the alpha).
edit: Honestly, for emote purposes I think the cutout is Good Enough™—you can definitely see the outline against a dark background, but it’s not horrible, and it looks fine even at Hexbear’s max display size with the default theme:

If you can’t make it work, don’t worry about it! Honestly, emote filesize bloat (especially in the emote picker) is a much bigger issue than a single emote and it’s something I’d like to address (I’ve talked about it before), but I know that dev time is precious and there are bigger fish to fry.
