I don’t get why they would bother with this, isn’t showcasing american prosperity/excess to foreign dignitaries part of america’s soft power? I really don’t see the downside of having diplomats buying a bunch of american crap to send home, if anything it just helps spread american products to new markets and gets their foot in the door with the ruling classes of various nations

To me this just looks like a petty punitive measure that’s just kind of embarrassing on america’s part

Kinda fucked up ngl. Usually when I go overseas I buy a bunch of chocolates or even mozzarella to give to family since it’s much harder to get over there

Makes sense, Jordan / Palestine isn’t even as economically isolated (well, before 2023) and I’d bring multiple checked bags just for common goods and especially OTC medicines. Bringing the kirkland brand ibuprofen made you look like a king in grandma’s eyes.

Do they have membership cards? Does diplomatic immunity extend to Costco Membership? Also I was hoping this meant literally during UN meetings, like they were skipping out to do their shopping.
