Holland is such a pretty word, evoking imagery of tulips & wooden klompen shoes & windmills. Why aren’t we allowed to say “Holland” anymore?
- Holland’s one province, only about 20% of the Netherlands is Holland - PS, I’m wrong, it’s two provinces, North Holland and South Holland - PPS: the gov stopped supporting thepars pro toto name in 2020: https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-news/netherlands-holland-official-name-change - I’m not sure the reason tourists mainly go to Amsterdam is because they don’t know Holland is more than Amsterdam… 🍃 - Transport is so ridiculously good that you can glide between Amsterdam and Rotterdam without even really noticing you’ve changed cities.

- 🌷Thank you for explaining 🙏🏼

- It’s like calling America “New York”. - and similar to calling the USA ‘America’ - (totum pro parte versus pars pro toto)

- There is also a lot of history in terms of the different countries in that region forming out of Flanders. Tangentially related but quite interesting if you get into the history of the Hanseatic League and such.
- You say Holland when you don’t want people to assume you are going on a drugs and hookers holiday. - I think that when I hear Amsterdam.
