Companies generally do not use ‘VPN services’, they maintain their own VPNs. This is what makes them virtual Private networks. The data retention laws are aimed for the ‘VPN providers’ who use the ‘VPN’ term for a different, very non-private services, used to circumvent geolocation and make tracking (even lawful) by some parties harder.

I do not say those services should not exist (there are legitimate uses for them), but do not mix them with actual private networks.

That is why I think FB and others might been quietly lobbying for this solution. This way they can stll be predatory, as long as the kids pretend to be adult. Or just abuse adult users. VPN originally meant ‘virtual PRIVATE network’. And it is still used that way, where security matters. Virtual private network meaning it connects someone’s private resources into a virtual network not accessible to anyone else.

The ‘VPN services’ you are talking here about are quite different. They use the same technology, just to tunnel traffic through a third party server. Third party - that is opposite to ‘private’.

I do use VPN a lot, but to securely connect my devices over untrusted network (internet). But in this case I control both ends of the VPN tunnel. Or my employer controls that for my work traffic. That is the legitimate use of VPN.

The other ‘VPNs’ are just ‘foreign IP as a service’. Still useful, but I have they being called VPNs and advertised as a privacy solution.

Not UPA, but the topic of UPA is popular within the right-wing populist. They want to keep this a hot topic, while rest of us would rather keep this in the past. Such provocation initiated by those populists doe not seem completely unlikely. Russian influence or just a particularly stupid Ukrainian teen seem more likely explanation to me.

Do you even know what we are talking about? The migrants in question are not Russians. They are asylum seekers, people from Middle East or and Africa, tricked by Russians, Belarusians and smugglers into taking the route through Polish eastern border when looking for a better life in the West. They are denied asylum, brutally pushed back to Belarus (which pushes them back to Poland), often dying in the forest and swamps.

In fact Russians (most probable insurgents), as white people, would get much easier pass there.

And I am not talking about ‘accepting blindly’ anyone crossing the border. Just following the law (Polish and international ) and some human decency (like providing health care for sick and wounded) would do.
