Came to say what most have already: It works already as well / better than Gnome, doesn’t require superduper hardware, stable, why the feck did I wait until 2025 to try it? Not looking back.

World News@lemmy.ml•Two killed in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon; 41 patients in critical condition evacuated from Gaza; U.S. considers implementing a "Gaza Humanitarian Belt”English
1·21 hours agoThere is almost no choice but to hope for a US humanitarian aid belt, but will it be worth anything. What more must those poor people have to endure before our countries do anything to save them. Every life can still be saved

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Best "bang for your buck" NUC/Pi setup for Jellyfin/HomeAssistant/PiHole?English
1·5 days agoWe appear to have a similar affliction. I’m let down terribly by a lack of expertise, and so take a best alternative in most cases. My VPN is Mullvad. I’m due renewal in the next 2 months so will be pondering simple renewal vs switching to ProtonVPN. The purity of Mullvad privacy is wasted on me as the only real difference appears to be the option to pay by bitcoin or cash. Proton appears to have more options and less likely to be blocked if you go away on holiday etc.

Linux@programming.dev•5 reasons you should ditch Windows for Linux todayEnglish
3·6 days agoI am in a similar situation but in healthcare. Nothing save as the web-front ends are any use in linux. Some information systems are built on linux, but we need a Windows machine to use them, Hopefully the slow European gentle tilt to FOSS might help.

4·6 days agoMaybe you enjoy the “getting it to work” part more than me. I went from RPi to a cheap used miniPC from eBay. Installed Debian and bought a wireless keyboard with touchpad. Cheap and so much simpler. Plays all my flac music through Strawberry, plays all my movies at home and away. Easiest VPN setup, I don’t use smart functions of my TV, just the miniPC for everything.

Technology@lemmy.world•4chan faces UK ban after refusing to pay ‘stupid’ fineEnglish
3·6 days agoAs shitty as 4chan is, as dumb and pointless as that UK legislation is, we STILL invited Trump to dine with the King. The Royal family didn’t even invite thier own pedo.

Step on one and you quickly change your mind.
I’m not aware of of an alternative yet. I have a pal who is excellent with GIMP as he enjoys his astrophotography where he produces super clean images from multiple exposures of the stars. He seems to be able to use GIMP the same way as Photoscan, but simply uses Photoscan as it’s just simpler. I haven’t taken the dive into GIMP as there’s that learning curve, but maybe need to bite the bullet for the times I need it in the meantime.
I think (hope) that we will have a number of phone OS options in the near future. Android with Google elements replaced and more developed Linux phones. The Android option appears easier and so may take the lead.
I’m trying to fund these projects. It might not be much, but but a little bit now and then might make a difference.
