  • CW discussion of trigger language SV

I get why it’s censored, and I think preventing misuse of the the word as is common in wider society is a good thing (Sports team A beat Sports team B) etc. but I’m not sure censoring the word itself makes it much less triggering.

If the word is being used correctly, then it’s the context of sexual violence that is the triggering part not that specific word, if the word is being used incorrectly then that misuse of the word should be dealt with, just as seeing “sports team a xxxx sports team b” will still be triggering even if the the word isn’t there it still shows the use of sexually violent words and mindset.

So IMHO censoring the word itself isn’t productive, it makes more difficult legitimate discussion, and doesn’t lessen the impact of misuse.

But also I have no skin in this game so whatever the opinion is people who are affected should obviously be prioritised over mine.

  • I would suggest the support this has from valve that means it works great out the box does indeed make it novel.

It will move the needle far more than like 2 hobbyists flashing niche hardware. Nobody cares about that because it’s so small scale. Nobody will put in the support for that user base. Conversely the valve frame is going to be a mass market product that will be in the hands of loads of people, so issues and problems will get fixed, software will be optimised and if the install base is large enough it will be targeted with new software and features.

That’s the novelty. It’s likely going to change things.

  • You’re welcome and no worries.

Explanation of why it’s passive aggressive and annoyed me.

    Yes, it is passive aggressive.

    “Why don’t people…?”

You’re trying to attack your grievance, I.e. people not using archive links, but rather than just advocating directly for your grievance, you’re indirectly (passively) posing your grievance as a question ostensibly at no one in particular.

I didn’t much care for the condescending tone of “Very good, you got other sources… Now lemme archive 'em” either, which further contributes to the passive aggressive feel of the comment.

Posing a point directly doesn’t have to be mean or rude either. You could just as well have said:

“@Palacegalleryratio, please can you alter your link to an archive one? So we don’t drive traffic to reactionary sites. I’ve got a link for you to use here!”

It’s direct, polite and helpful - and it’s basically what you did but it wouldn’t have rubbed me up the wrong way, on what was an entirely reasonable request I was only too happy to action.
