KaiOS 4.x just dropped with Fx 128 I think. You will be on an underpowered flip phone, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing…

I got a Sailfish OS last year seeing the writing on the wall already with all the bootloader locking. It’s been bumpy to put it lightly, but at least it has Android apps to help get over the gaping holes of basic missing apps like a halfway decent XMPP client. …But at least native WhisperFish lets you get around the lack of Signal on most non-duopoly platforms.

Yeah. It’s thoroughly documented tho & nothing seems over-the-top. They also contribute to upstreams. A lot of folks use GitLab despite it only being open core. Every day I have to interact with Microsoft GitHub which is fully proprietary & they do nothing but inject social media nonsense to the platform & train on your data just to sell it back to you. Yet rarely does anyone complain about them being it the middle of free software, & instead they move all comms to the black hole of Discord. Meanwhile Google is no longer doing Android in the open.

I don’t think what Jolla is doing is evil—you just have to play by stupid capitalist rules to be a ‘viable business’ in this economy to keep the lights on. They used to have more stuff open IIRC, but it can be hard to do in practice if you are picking a niche taking on a duopoly.

Sailfish OS exists right now as a Linux mobile OS with their own hardware (& supports the Sony Xperia line as well—which have microSD & headphone jacks …which no GrapheneOS devices support 🙃)

I would say the same & I don’t even use it—but I would trust it being around the longest & is better than GNOME IMO.

Cherry on the shit sundae was a couple months ago when Google started to require JavaScript be enabled for search.

Pijul decouples your identity from you commits & proves your SSH key ownership. It is a beautiful thing that you can change your name or email & not have to get a force push to update all that info since you are now just identified by the primary key from the identity server. No more worries about being embarrassed by your old Protonmail or GMail account,no more dead names in the commit history, & no care about identity stealing by just changing the config.

We can & should demand at least gateways & mirrors if not at least a single alternative. Considering they have funding, they can self-host to actually control a forum or chat room as well as a code mirror (even if just HTTP with no forge). Folks are also undervaluing how some users are banned from access to these US-based platforms under US sanctions.

The pro-FOSS stance would be to get your communications off of being exclusively proprietary platforms. Developer & early adopter freedom & privacy matters—but instead they are choosing Discord & Microsoft GitHub as their only platforms.

How did Cloudflare get involved on this setup?

We need to stop this usage of proprietary MS GitHub + Discord in free software. It completely undermines the philosophy.

Matrix is defacto centralized around Matrix.org & servers they provide (where the cost of hosting makes it largely inaccessible to low-spec & medium-sized servers causing them to inevitably shut down & recommending users back to Matrix.org). All the metadata gets synced back to the mothership that was funded by Israeli intelligence. Avoid it.

Cloudflare is a CIA front. They offer “free” DDoS protection + static proxy thereby giving Cloudflare the ability to MitM all TLS connections thru their servers. They convinced so many ‘developers’ via ‘influencers’ that every tiny site needs Cloudflare in front of it as a precaution/optimization, but it is an entirely premature optimization that doesn’t need to so widely deployed, but it is. 🤔

Microsoft has always been an enemy but somehow managed to Trojan horse their way into the minds of developers again (neo-EEE) trying to centralize how software is created. Like we avoid Microsoft Windows, the rest of the Microsoft ecosystem should equally be avoided: Copilot, LinkedIn, Outlook, Exchange, Office, Teams, Azure, VSCode, npm, GitHub (Sponsors, Codespaces, Copilot). Literally none of these projects/services can’t be replaced to help protect the privacy of your clients, coworkers, contributors.

I suppose I would choose Darcs & Pijul for version control systems to bit into Git hegemony (& if you prefer Git hegemony, don’t use proprietary code forges).

Additionally just the general vibes of IRC & XMPP for battle-tested chat applications that are lightweight for clients & servers alike. These are the kinds of tools your next community should be built on if you want to minimize resource usage (data plans, storage capacity, battery, CPU churn).

Choosing proprietary tools and services for your free software project ultimately sends a message to downstream developers and users of your project that freedom of all users—developers included—is not a priority.

Even better when someone forked it away from proprietary, closed-source, publicly-traded, for-profit, US-based, account-required, training-AI-on-your-code-then-selling-it-back-to-you Microsoft GitHub forge/social media network often with vendor lock-in to some other forge without all that BS.

It’s pretty hard to fight hegemony when your salary is just built on donations. A lot of important tech is also paid for via government grants then the private sector gets to use it and erect the walled gardens when it should be in the commons.
