1·6 days agoI’m more concerned with the extremely needless and harmful waste of $500 million dollars worth of goods, rather than what the rich person says its for.
Hundreds of lifetimes of work down the drain for this shit.

8·7 days agoIf you can get BBC Good Food outside the UK, it’s a fantastic source. Straight to the point, never had a bad recipe. My family have been referring to them for literal decades (though sadly, there’s creeping monetisation, it’s still 99% usable for now).
Not BBC .co.uk recipes, those frequently suck. BBC Good Food specifically, plenty vegan ones too.

51·7 days agoOkay, so Gabe Newell has… too much money.
And the reason we see nothing of him anymore is that he’s given up caring about games and is instead busy doing really standard rich person stuff, achieving bugger all.

6·7 days agoFWIW, I feel I’ve been in a very similar headspace for many years. It’s actually a real struggle to be a man doing things outside the masculine stereotype (and probably true to varying degrees for any gender acting outside their stereotype). I don’t consider myself trans - I just want to do stuff that isn’t the cultural norm.
In my personal case, it’s why, despite the fact I’d say I’m a man generally, I’ve otherwise tried to eschew gender labels. Because it feels like any label at all suddenly sets people with cultural expectations of me. And that is frustrating.
Ralsei’s fucking awesome by the way, I dig his clothing and want it.

askchapo@hexbear.net•How many million US dollars do you feel you could have before it becomes detrimental to your well being?English
10·14 days agoWell… one does not become a millionaire in a vacuum, and I think the context of how you become that rich is important.
e.g. if you’re a millionaire because you own a company and you’re exploiting all those workers, then you’d HAVE to find a way to justify it yourself or you’d go insane from your own evil actions.
But if you’re a trillionaire because your ultra rich distant relative who you never knew about left it to you, then you’ve no need to make that kind of internal justification.
If you’re a treat producing celebrity, this just comes down to what you did and what you supported to get said money. It’s probably impossible to be completely blemish-free.
As the question stands on its own, I think I could literally have all the money in the world before it became detrimental to MY well being. Because the next thing I would do is use it to fundamentally change society, like get to abolishing capitalism, and/or give it all away.

chat@hexbear.net•How do get out of dark places?English
7·14 days agoA month is absolutely not a long time to get over a breakup. In some ways, I’d bet you’re grieving the 6 months of “hope for an amazing future” even more than the relationship itself. I’ve been in a very similar situation, including suicidal thoughts. There is no magical fix, but don’t be hard on yourself, be patient with your feelings.
It’ll be a long while before you “feel like it” but my best advice is to take opportunities for any nice time you can spend with friends, family, or even just kind strangers - it is healing.
It is rough, pal, sending my best vibes.

Main, home of the dope ass bear.@hexbear.net•Lemmy makes sense as a lifeboat for communist subs that get banned off reddit but for everything else doesn't it feel like a pointless derivative?English
9·15 days agoI’m not sure the point of Lemmy was to magically make people more tolerable. Yeah, Lemmy is filled with the same libs, but it also
- (For now) has significantly fewer bots
- Isn’t directly controlled by the USA Govt, thus leading to
- Less censorship and
- Less surveillance
- Doesn’t have ads
- Allows people to freely fork and migrate if they hate their instance
- You get the idea
Does Lemmy cure all people of all their wrong opinions? No. But we have had a decent number of converts on Hexbear because the reduced lib control meant that people were exposed to communist viewpoints and actually listened. That couldn’t happen on Reddit, and as we know, even if it did, Reddit would just shut down any comms therein.
So the “point” as I see it, if there is such a thing, is to actually allow free communication of ideas in a way that is significantly less US-controlled and thus allows the proliferation of leftist ideas and discussion. Or at the very least improve peoples’ standard of living by way of more privacy, more control, less bot propaganda, and fewer ads. Not to be a magical lib instant de-brainwashing device.

Chapotraphouse@hexbear.net•Before revolution can take place, the proletariat must have lost absolutely all hope in bourgeois democracy - George L. JacksonEnglish
13·17 days agoI’m not sure this condition is even possible in the internet era. It seems no matter how dogshit, how broken down, how shattered and disabled bourgeois democratic systems are, a good percentage read “everything fine and all bad stuff is migrant’s/other party’s fault”, and they’re steadfast in their positions.
In the majority of western democracies, the eligible voter’s overwhelmingly desired choice is “no vote” or “none of the above”, and they overwhelmingly disapprove of their governments. Yet they’ll still uphold bourgeois democracy as somehow ‘working’ and just think it needs a tweak or two.
I’m not saying the quote’s necessarily wrong. But I fear that if it’s right, we’ll never have a real revolution again.

3·17 days agoAlmost every western country has a history of compelling website owners, or secretly seizing and controlling websites to log anything they want. So they only need to do that, start logging IPs, and the next time you log in job done. No website can really be inherently ‘safe’ in terms of anonymity from the legal system.

31·19 days agoThe amount of people who seem to consider themselves Soviet history experts because they watched the ‘Chernobyl’ series (or “Enemy at the Gates”, “The Death of Stalin”) is a huge bugbear of mine.
Slap ‘based on a true story’ on anything and people seem to believe their complete nonsense slop is a found-footage documentary. I’m sick of telling so many people people that their favourite fictional “historical” drama (or indeed, even comedy) contains basically zero facts.
No there wasn’t one gun per two fucking people in Soviet WW2, no everyone wasn’t sleeping on fucking burgers on a control panel and aaaaaaa every ‘fact’ of yours is wrong just stop it

I have these, got them as a gift.
They’re about as pointless as you’d expect.
